Levite’s Leaven #7
A Baker’s Dozen of Things to Do for Oklahoma’s Centennial
- Get new glasses so you can read this tiny print! (So much to tell; so little room!)
- Order address labels (which are not address labels but stickers to slap on everything including your dog!) Have them say: “
Oklahoma’s Heaven in 2007”
Oklahoma Heritage Week November 11-17, 2007
You can get 500 gold ones for $6.45 from
Labels! Dept 3395, PO Box 3200, Salem, VA. 24153 As I said, they are really address labels, but they don’t care what you say as long as you stay in their number-of-letter-per-line rule. Change the wording to suit your need.
Have them say “Oklahoma Centennial BookClub” (can’t have a space there…too many letters!) and put them on the books in your library by
Oklahoma authors!
- Order prizes for those who read 100 books by Oklahoma writers (Check my web or ODL’s web for list) and give them out in weekly
ceremonies, everything from certificates, to stickers, to canned buffalo, t-shirts, Oklahoma flags…get a local civics club to furnish them…ask for a set amount and get newspaper pub for them.
- If you want amazingly wonderful big stuffed buffalo, call or write:
Last year she did 8 for one lady who made a harness for them and had them pulling Santa’s sleigh! Do that and raffle it off to buy
Centennial books!
- Order a case of canned buffalo (see the order sheet) and sell or use for prizes.
- Drop by the OU Press booth for information on new exciting Oklahoma books to be issued in 2007 from authors like S. E. Hinton and Rilla
Askew. Right now order An Autumn Remembered by Gary King, the OU Football Book!
- Have an Oklahoma author to your school…pay them!
Get the money by buying their books from the publisher and selling them at an autograph party. I know Hannibal Johnson, Anna Myers, Mike Wimmer, Diane Curtis-Regan and Kim Doner all have new ones out and I’m sure the Wallaces and many others do, too.
This next idea comes from the Mid-High Oklahoma History teachers who have a project which requires students to read a book by, about, or set in Oklahoma.
- They have a room designated for books that meet that requirement and are collecting photos of famous Oklahomans to display! Isn’t that
a great idea? And one you could do with a minimum amount of effort…copy the photos on book covers or download them from Oklahoma author’s webs! Easy!!!!
- Order t-shirts with “Oklahoma’s Heaven in 2007” from Suzy’s Creations, 753 Asp Avenue, Norman, OK 73069, (405) 447-3839.
- Call Oklahoma Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped 1-405-521-3514 to get CD’s of my books and those of other Oklahoma
writers. Your students do not have to be blind to get these services, just handicapped.
- Contact Glenda Carlile at the Oklahoma Center for the Book 522-3575 for information about the Oklahoma author database. While
you’ve got Glenda on the line, schedule her for the wonderful programs she does about Oklahoma women, Elva Shartel Ferguson in particular.
- Watch for 2007 Almanac from ODL and order copy.
- Hold every day of Oklahoma’s 100th with gentle hands and love the moment!
