In 1927, young part-Cherokee Oklahoman Andy Payne, on the lookout for employment, spied a newspaper ad that made his jaw drop. The ad called for entrants to join the First Annual International Trans-continental Foot Race, and the winner would receive a whopping twenty-five thousand dollars!

A talented runner, Andy had always relied on foot power, but could he really succeed in racing across the entire United States? Andy would discover that there was one thing every great runner relies on: heart.

The Great American Bunion Derby -- it’s a grabber, it’s a page turner.  I was absolutely riveted.  I ran every suspenseful and grueling mile with Andy Payne as he proved that a ‘runner's heart’ can overcome all obstacles. It left me with such a arm and fuzzy feeling, that I just didn't want it to end."-- Dennis Weaver, actor “Gunsmoke" and "McCloud"
