In 1927, young part-Cherokee Oklahoman Andy Payne, on
the lookout for employment, spied a newspaper ad that made his jaw drop. The ad called for entrants to join the First Annual International Trans-continental Foot Race,
and the winner would receive a whopping twenty-five thousand dollars!
A talented runner, Andy had always relied on foot power, but could he really succeed in racing across the entire
United States? The contest would be known as “the Bunion Derby” for the toll it took on men’s feet. And the grueling journey would require more than physical stamina
and mental determination. Andy would discover that there was one thing every great runner relies on: heart.
